Metaverse Developers

The metaverse is an emerging 3D-enabled digital space that uses converging technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, blockchain technology, cloud computing, digital twins, e-commerce, Internet of Things, and social platforms) to create a lifelike experience online. In practice, the metaverse is a series of metaverses that have been created by different companies and other entities, with limited interoperability. Examples of popular metaverses include Second Life, VRChat, and Roblox. Virtual and augmented reality headsets, gaming consoles, smartphones, and computers are used to access the metaverse.

The job title “metaverse developer” covers a wide range of subspecialties. For example, game designers focus on creating immersive game-like experiences within the metaverse, while blockchain engineers build and oversee the blockchain technology systems that support the metaverse. Hardware developers and engineers design and develop the virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), gaming consoles, and other hardware that people use to access the metaverse, while 3D animators create characters, scenery, other visual effects, and entire worlds for the metaverse. Others focus on cybersecurity, the Internet of Things, cloud computing, or nonfungible token design.

Most developers use tools such as Unity and Unreal Engine to design and build interactive virtual worlds (e.g., applications, platforms, games) that can be accessed in the metaverse. They also develop user interfaces that allow users to easily interact with the metaverse, as well as ensure that cybersecurity measures are in place to protect the privacy of users and their financial data. Developers monitor the performance of the virtual worlds that they create and make improvements, when necessary. They also work with company executives and others to identify new features to add to their company’s metaverse products.
