Psychologists

Earnings

Because the psychology field offers so many different types of employment possibilities, salaries for psychologists vary greatly. In addition, the typical conditions affecting salaries, such as the person's level of education, professional experience, and location, also apply. The U.S. Department of Labor reports that clinical and counseling psychologists earned median salaries of $95,830 in May 2024. Salaries for all psychologists employed in the U.S. in May 2024 ranged from less than $54,860 to $157,330 or more. The DOL also reports the following mean annual earnings for clinical, counseling, and school psychologists by employer: government, $126,990; ambulatory health care services, $96,960; hospitals, $96,060; and local elementary/secondary schools, $85,920. Industrial-organizational psychologists averaged $109,840 per year.

Benefits for full-time workers include vacation and sick time, health, and sometimes dental, insurance, and pension or 401(k) plans. Self-employed psychologists must provide their own benefits.
