Advanced manufacturing engineers typically work at factories, laboratories, or offices. Those who work in manufacturing plants and laboratories typically wear protective clothing and eye and ear protective gear. Depending on the industry, manufacturing plants can be hot, loud, chaotic, or relatively quiet and clean. The use of automation has reduced the number of employees at factories.

Engineers often work a standard 40-hour week, but since modern manufacturing facilities operate 24 hours a day, they may be required to work night and weekend shifts. Some engineers travel frequently between several manufacturing plants operated by their employer or to the factories of their company’s customers.

Engineering careers are often featured on “best job” lists because they offer good pay, an intellectually challenging work environment, and strong job growth.
