Clinical Research Nurses

High School

Recommended high school courses include health science, biology, chemistry, psychology, mathematics, statistics, and computer science (including artificial intelligence, data analytics, and database management). Ethics and philosophy courses are also advised. You’ll need to be a strong communicator, so be sure to take English, speech, and writing courses.

Postsecondary Education

To become a clinical research nurse, you will first need to earn a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) and also receive a nursing license in the state where you plan to work. Because the field is so competitive and demanding, many go on to earn a master’s degree in nursing (MSN). Some programs offer an accelerated program that combines BSN and MSN degrees. Some nurses also choose to earn a doctor of philosophy in nursing degree. Colleges and universities also offer courses and minors in clinical research, clinical trials management, and related fields.

Certification

Some colleges and universities offer certificate programs in clinical research, clinical trials management, and related fields. Programs typically last four months to a year and are available in online, in-person, and hybrid formats. One such program is provided by the University of Delaware, which offers a clinical trials management certificate program. Course topics include clinical trials process, roles, and responsibilities; U.S. regulatory compliance; ethical and safety considerations; data management and coding principles; and monitoring and oversight of clinical trials.
