Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Aspiring clinical research nurses must have at least several years of experience in clinical trials research.

Clinical research nurses need top-notch communication and interpersonal skills because they must be able to explain clinical protocols to patients and answer their questions. They also need to communicate data to research coordinators and other interested parties. Nurses must have strong analytical skills in order to provide qualitative and quantitative data to research coordinators. Other important traits include good problem-solving and organizational skills, the ability to multitask and work under pressure, and the ability to work both independently and as a member of team, when necessary. Clinical research nurses must know how to use databases and patient tracking systems that are utilized in clinical research trials, as well as have knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act policies and procedures.
