Forensic Experts

Unions and Associations

Forensic experts who work for government agencies can join the American Federation of Government Employees, a union that represents government workers. They also may join unions in their particular specialty. For example, forensic engineers may be represented by the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, and other unions. The American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) is the largest forensic science organization in the world. There are also dozens of organizations at the national, state, and locals levels—such as the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners, American Board of Criminalistics, and the Society of Forensic Toxicologists—that represent forensic experts in various specialties. The AAFS Web site is a good place to go to learn about forensic science specialties and the professional associations in each discipline.
