Hospital-at-Home Managers

Three years of experience in lower-level supervisory or management positions—ideally those that provide home-based healthcare—are needed to enter this career. Experience in geriatrics and palliative care is also important.

HaH managers must understand medical and information technology terminology; be familiar with telehealth hardware and software; and have an understanding of business practices and the regulatory and reimbursement issues that are associated with hospital-at-home care. They must be creative and flexible, as well as have good problem-solving skills, in order to develop and oversee effective HaH programs. Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills are important because managers are responsible for selecting and training staff and collaborating closely with department heads and top executives. Other important traits for HaH managers include excellent leadership and project management abilities; enthusiasm; top-notch organizational, analytical, and time-management skills; curiosity; flexibility; and a willingness to continue to learn throughout one’s career.
