Optical Engineers

Unions and Associations

Some optical engineers may be represented by the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (http://www.ifpte.org), the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (https://www.speea.org), and other unions. In addition, there are many organizations that provide useful resources and professional support to engineers. The IEEE Photonics Society's Web site has an extensive listing of student resources. The Optical Society is an international organization that offers membership and continuing education opportunities. SPIE is an international organization that "advances emerging technologies through interdisciplinary information exchange, continuing education, publications, ...and career and professional growth." Students are offered a discounted membership fee, which entitles the member to a 50 percent discount on all courses, free workshops at SPIE events, online courses, and member-only Webcasts.
