Unions and Associations
Some optical engineers may be represented by the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (https://www.ifpte.org), the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (https://www.speea.org), and other unions. In addition, there are many organizations that provide useful resources and professional support to engineers. The IEEE Photonics Society's Web site has an extensive listing of student resources. Optica is an international organization that offers membership and continuing education opportunities. SPIE is an international organization that "partners with researchers, educators, and industry to advance light-based research and technologies for the betterment of the human condition." Students are offered a discounted membership fee, which entitles the member to a discount on courses, 10 complimentary SPIE Digital Library downloads, one free journal subscription, and other benefits.
