Unions and Associations

Some technicians are represented by the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers; International Union of Electronic, Electrical, Salaried, Machine, and Furniture Workers/Communications Workers of America; International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace; and other unions. Technicians can join professional associations such as the American Society of Certified Engineering Technicians, American Chemical Society, Association for Computing Machinery, IEEE Computer Society, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and SME. These organizations provide networking opportunities, continuing education classes, publications, conferences, and other resources. There are also professional associations at the state and local levels. ETA International, International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians, National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, and SME provide certification to engineering technicians.
