Behavioral Health Technicians

Unions and Associations

Behavioral health technicians who work for government agencies can join the American Federation of Government Employees, a union that represents government workers. The American Association of Psychiatric Technicians offers certification and education programs. The American Correctional Association also offers certification. Technicians may belong to the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, which provides continuing education programs, conventions, professional journals, and other membership resources. State-level organizations can also provide useful resources. For example, behavioral health professionals in Illinois can become members of the Illinois Association for Behavioral Health and access continuing education classes and other resources. Those who work in California can join the California Association of Psychiatric Technicians, a professional association and union that represents state-licensed technicians who work in state programs that serve people with mental illnesses and developmental disabilities.
