Behavioral health technicians are employed in various settings. They work in residences where patients live, as well as in rehabilitation facilities and clinics, mental health facilities, hospitals, shelters, and schools. The work environment will vary depending on the setting, but most settings will be clean and equipped with resources and staff to support the work of the technicians.

Behavioral health technicians work full time or part time. The hours can be long, with some work weeks lasting longer than 40 hours per week. Technicians may work shifts in the evenings, over weekends, and on the holidays also. Some travel may be required for technicians who work with different patients in their homes.
