Biomedical Equipment Technicians

Work Environment

Working conditions for biomedical equipment technicians vary according to employer and type of work done. Hospital employees generally work a 40-hour week; their schedules sometimes include night and weekend shifts and holidays, and some technicians may be on call for emergencies. Technicians must occasionally lift and carry heavy objects, as well as work in tight spaces. Those who are employed by equipment manufacturers may have to travel extensively to install or service equipment.

The physical surroundings in which biomedical equipment technicians work may vary from day to day. Technicians may work in a lab or treatment room with patients or consult with engineers, administrators, and other staff members. Other days, technicians may spend most of their time at a workbench repairing equipment.
