Geriatric Nurses

Unions and Associations

Some geriatric nurses may be members of the American Federation of Government Employees; American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees; National Nurses United; and other unions. Geriatric nurses may join professional associations such as the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), American Geriatrics Society, and the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association. The AACN and the American Nurses Credentialing Center offer certification. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing represents 825 member schools of nursing; these schools offer a mix of baccalaureate, graduate, and post-graduate programs. Other useful organizations include the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education and the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing.
