Artificial Intelligence Auditors

High School

Take courses in computer science (especially artificial intelligence), mathematics, business, and ethics to prepare for a career as an AI auditor. Other recommended classes include English, speech, writing, and social studies.

Postsecondary Education

You will need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence, computer science, data science, cybersecurity, or a related field to work as an AI auditor. Coursework and/or certificates in programming and technology ethics will also be useful.

Some people enter the specialty of AI auditing after working as traditional auditors. They typically earn a minimum of a bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting or a related field such as economics, finance, or business administration. They augment this training by earning certificates or degrees in artificial intelligence, computer science, data science, cybersecurity, or a related field.

Certification

Some colleges and universities offer undergraduate and graduate certificate programs in AI governance and risk management, AI governance and policy, AI ethics, or related fields. For example, Georgetown University offers an online certificate in AI governance and compliance. The program has three modules: Demystifying AI and GenAI and Building Trustworthy Systems, AI Governance Frameworks, and Legal and Ethical Considerations. Other Education or Training

Continuing education seminars, webinars, and other learning opportunities are provided by professional associations, colleges and universities, and for-profit online learning platforms. For example, ISACA offers classes such as Introduction to AI for Auditors and Auditing Generative AI: Methodology, Risk Mitigation, and Best Practices. The Institute of Internal Auditors offers Auditing Artificial Intelligence: A Hands-On Course for Internal Auditors and other classes. Continuing education opportunities are also offered by the International Association of Privacy Professionals, Association for Computing Machinery, and organizations at the state and local levels.
