Artificial intelligence as we know it today can be traced to 1943, when researchers at the University of Chicago conceived of the first neural network. The analytics software developer SAS describes neural networks as “computing systems with interconnected nodes that work much like neurons in the human brain. Using algorithms, they can recognize hidden patterns and correlations in raw data, cluster and classify it, and—over time—continuously learn and improve.”

In the last decade, advances in technology have supercharged artificial intelligence, and it is now a key tool that is used in business, military, personal, and other settings. But the Harvard Business Review reports that “this increase in usage has also sparked a growing awareness of the hazards that can come with AI systems: from the disparate treatment of different groups (particularly important in legally protected fields such as lending and housing), to the fabrication of false, sensitive, or harmful information, especially for very consequential topics such as medical or legal questions.” For that reason, the career of AI auditor has emerged.
