Artificial Intelligence Ethicists

Advancement Prospects

Some AI ethicists—especially those at smaller companies—advance by moving on to work at larger employers that offer higher pay, better fringe benefits, and more opportunities for advancement. Experienced AI ethicists with managerial abilities can be promoted to manage their department or supervise their employer’s team of ethicists. At large companies, managers can be promoted to the position of chief AI ethics officer, who oversees all ethics-related initiatives at their organization. “The role of chief AI ethics officer (CAIEO) is on the rise at leading enterprises as digital transformation becomes more complex and AI adoption grows rapidly across industries,” according to the World Economic Forum. “Forward-looking companies are turning to the CAIEO role to put into operation corporate values related to AI across the organization’s divisions.” Some AI ethicists launch their own consulting businesses, while others choose to teach ethics courses at a college or university.
