Although AI as we know it today can be traced back to the 1940s, it was not until the last decade or so that it has become a major part of society. Seventy-eight percent of workers who were surveyed by the consulting firm McKinsey & Company in 2024 said that their organizations used AI in at least one business function, up from 55 percent in 2023. The technology was most frequently used in information technology and marketing and sales functions, followed by service operations. With advanced AI (especially generative AI) in wide use by businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, and individuals, serious ethical concerns have arisen. Ongoing issues regarding the use of AI (such as racial and gender bias, chatbot hallucinations, and the generation of false information) have created a strong need for AI ethicists to work with software and AI systems developers, policy makers, and elected officials to create responsible and ethical AI applications and address issues with existing AI technology.
