Artificial Intelligence Trainers

Education and Training Requirements

High School

Take courses in computer science (especially artificial intelligence and data science), mathematics, business, and ethics to prepare for a career as an AI trainer. Other recommended classes include English, speech, writing, foreign language, and social studies.

Postsecondary Education

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence, computer science, data science, data analytics, mathematics, or a related field is required to work as an AI trainer. Completing coursework and/or certificates in project management and technology ethics will also be useful. A master’s degree in AI or technology project management may be required for higher-level roles. Subject-matter experts who work as AI trainers typically have master’s degrees and doctorates (e.g., biology, quantum computing, history, linguistics, psychology) in their field of expertise.

Certification

Some colleges and universities offer certificate programs in AI and related fields. For example, Johns Hopkins University offers a certificate program in applied generative AI. Some postsecondary institutions and tech companies partner with online learning programs to offer certificate programs. For example, IBM partners with Coursera to provide an introduction to artificial intelligence certificate program, and Microsoft partners with Coursera to offer an artificial intelligence and machine learning engineering professional certificate.

Other Education or Training

Professional associations, colleges and universities, tech companies, and for-profit online learning platforms provide continuing education seminars, webinars, and other learning opportunities. Continuing education opportunities are also offered by the Association for Computing Machinery, Blockchain Council, International Association of Prompt Engineering Professionals, and organizations at the state and local levels.
