Artificial Intelligence Trainers

Aspiring AI trainers typically enter the field after obtaining one to three years of experience in a lower-level AI–related position such as AI data analyst, data labeler, or prompt engineer.

AI trainers need a variety of technical and soft skills to be successful in their work. Regarding technical skills, they must have expertise in various AI architectures, large language model interfaces and tools, data science and management, data-labeling platforms, model fine-tuning tools, and testing and quality assurance platforms. They also must understand how AI models interpret and respond to human language. While not required by all employers, AI trainers will benefit by having basic programming (Python, SQL, R, Java) skills. They also need an understanding of AI ethics and compliance issues.

AI trainers must have strong communication skills in order to explain their work to technical and nontechnical teams, write reports, and, of course, train AI models. They must be creative, curious, and patient since each dataset and AI model behaves differently, which will require them to reframe prompts, think-outside-the-box, and test, revise, and test again during the training process. Other important traits include strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a detail-oriented personality, and a willingness to continue to learn throughout one’s career.
