Data Governance Managers

There has always been a need to manage and protect data, but advances in technology in the past few decades have made it even more critical for strong data governance and management protocols. In the 2010s, the emergence of Big Data (a collection of large datasets that cannot be analyzed effectively by using traditional statistical methods) created vast amounts of structured, unstructured, and semi-structured data. As a result, a need developed for specially trained workers to ensure data integrity, security, and availability. Data governance is a subfield of data management. The need for data governance managers has increased in recent years because of the use of advanced artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. “Artificial intelligence, Big Data, and digital transformation efforts are the primary drivers of data governance programs,” according to IBM. “As the volume of data increases from new data sources, such as Internet of Things technologies, organizations need to reconsider their data management practices to scale their business intelligence efforts.”

In 2024, 71 percent of data and analytics professionals who were surveyed by the Center for Applied AI and Business Analytics at Drexel University, in partnership with Precisely, reported having a data governance program. This was an increase of 11 percent since 2023.
