Information Technology Security Consultants

Work Environment

Information technology security consultants typically work in the offices of their company or on-site at a client (necessitating frequent travel until a project is completed). Some perform all or a portion of their work in home offices.

Some IT security consulting positions can be stressful at times when colleagues don’t agree on solutions for security breaches, efforts to thwart hackers are unsuccessful, or when project deadlines loom. On the other hand, this career is extremely intellectually rewarding. No two workdays are alike, and IT security consultants get a lot of satisfaction from stopping denial of service attacks and solving other security-related problems.

Some information security analysts and management consultants work more than 40 hours a week (often at night and on weekends), according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Information technology security consultants often work unpredictable hours because they must be available anytime a security issue arises—whether it's 3:00 PM or 3:00 AM.
