Indoor Environmental Health Specialists

Advancement Prospects

With additional education, an IEHS can advance to the position of building performance diagnostician, who conducts visual inspections and uses technology to assess a building’s systems and overall structure in order to improve energy efficiency, identify and solve performance issues (including environmental health issues), and improve the overall quality of life for residents or other users. Others choose to become building scientists, who use their knowledge of science, energy efficiency, green construction methods, architecture, and the life sciences to study and better understand the lifecycle of buildings, or facilities managers, who use their extensive expertise in building automation systems to coordinate and supervise the operations and maintenance of building systems. Other advancement routes include becoming an indoor environmental health educator or launching a consulting firm that provides expertise to clients regarding indoor environmental health and remediation issues such as mold, radon, and asbestos.
