Indoor Environmental Health Specialists

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Indoor environmental health specialists must have a bachelor’s degree, plus experience via an internship or other experiential education experience. Some employers require job candidates to have five years of experience in lower-level positions. They also must know construction practices and building codes and have familiarity with green building design and construction, as well as the ability to read blueprints and schematics, plus basic knowledge of building automation systems, knowledge and understanding of the mechanical design of HVAC and other systems, and the ability to use hand and power tools.

Key personal traits for IEHSs include top-notch verbal and written communication skills; strong critical-thinking, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities; a detail-oriented personality; excellent organizational, time-management, and customer service skills; and the ability to work independently, when necessary.

Specialists must be in good physical health because they frequently climb ladders, work in confined spaces, carry equipment that may weigh up to 50 pounds, and otherwise do their jobs in physically demanding conditions.
