Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

Certification or Licensing

The following organizations provide voluntary certification:

  • American Council for Accredited Certification (indoor environmental investigation and consulting, indoor environmental remediation, microbial investigation and consulting, microbial remediation, residential mold inspection, indoor air quality administration, environmental allergen investigation and consulting, and other credentials)
  • Board for Global EHS Credentialing (certified industrial hygienist, certified associate industrial hygienist, and other credentials)
  • Board of Certified Safety Professionals (certified safety professional and other credentials)
  • National Organization of Remediators and Microbial Inspectors (certified indoor air quality specialist, certified mold assessor, certified mold remediator, and other credentials)

To become certified, applicants must meet educational and experience requirements and pass an examination. Those who are certified often earn higher salaries than those who are not certified. In some states, possessing a certification credential is required as part of the licensing process. Contact the aforementioned associations to learn more about certification requirements.
