Indoor Environmental Health Specialists

Employment Prospects

Employers

Indoor environmental health specialists work for colleges and universities, hospitals, manufacturers, government agencies, engineering consulting services firms, and any other company, organization, or agency that needs indoor environmental health issues investigated and remediated. Some IEHSs operate their own consulting firms. Others become high school or college teachers.

Starting Out

Aspiring IEHSs often land their first jobs after performing well during college internships or in other experiential learning experiences. Companies often use these programs to identify qualified candidates for full-time employment. Job leads can also be identified by utilizing the resources of one’s college’s career service center (alumni can also use these resources), by working with a recruiter, by attending career fairs and other networking events, and by contacting employers directly about potential job openings.
