Industrial Designers

Outlook

Employment of industrial designers is expected to grow slower than average for all careers through 2028, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) as a result of a little or no change in employment in the manufacturing sector during this time period. Despite this prediction, designers will be needed to improve product quality and safety, to design new products for the global marketplace, and to design high-technology products in consumer electronics, medicine, and transportation. The DOL says that "employment of industrial designers who design precision instruments and medical equipment is likely to continue to grow. Both areas require a high degree of technical ability and design sophistication." Industrial designers with proficiency in two- and three-dimensional computer-aided design and computer-aided industrial design and knowledge of the use of sustainable resources in design will have the best job prospects.
