Information Technology Consultants

Outlook

Employment growth for Information Technology (IT) consultants is expected to be very good during the next decade; technology is utilized in nearly every area of business, and the fields of social media, data mining/analysis, artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, cloud computing and data storage, mobile computing, IT security, and online employee collaboration continue to expand.

Many IT consultants are employed by management consulting firms. The U.S. Department of Labor reports that employment for management consultants is expected to grow much faster than the average for all careers through 2033, increasing by 11 percent.

Employment may be adversely affected if more companies create internal IT consulting divisions, which will reduce demand for stand-alone IT consulting firms. The offshoring of certain IT consulting duties (data processing, programming, Web/e-commerce site design, etc.) to countries where pay rates are lower than in the United States will also reduce demand for U.S.-based IT consultants.
