History

In 2013, Nevada became the first U.S. state to legalize interstate online gambling. In the following years, state legislatures in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming legalized some form of Internet gambling (which is often referred to as IGaming). Several other state legislatures are in the process of introducing bills that would legalize IGaming. In 2018, a U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowed states to introduce online sports wagering. By early 2025, online or physical sports betting was legal in 38 states and Washington, D.C., according to NBC News, which explained that sports betting had evolved into a multi-billion-dollar industry since the Supreme Court ruling in 2018.
