ZipRecruiter.com reports that Uber drivers had average annual earnings of $38,995 in 2024; salaries vary depending on the city in which drivers work. Uber drivers may earn wages that range from $9.86 to $30.77 per hour, or $20,500 to $64,000 per year. These totals include pay for each trip provided, earnings from surge pricing or price boosts, and tips.

The average Instacart full-service shopper may earn from about $9 to $43 per hour, or $23,000 to $90,000 per year, according to ZipRecruiter.com. The average salary for Instacart shoppers is $38,119. Instacart says that “shoppers get paid per batch that they complete. The amount you earn per batch of orders depends on the number of items, type of items, driving distance, and effort involved in shopping and delivering.” Full-service drivers keep all of the tips that they receive.

Aspiring delivery and rideshare drivers should keep in kind that they will be responsible for paying for gas, auto insurance (although some companies provide coverage to their contractors while they are working), and car maintenance, which can eat into their profits. In addition, many gig workers don't have access to employment benefits such as health insurance and disability.
