Artificial Intelligence Prompt Engineers

Education and Training Requirements

High School

In high school, take as many computer science classes (e.g., data science, artificial intelligence) as possible to build your technical skills. English, writing, and speech courses will help you to create clear and concise prompts that generate strong results. Other recommended classes include mathematics, business, philosophy, sociology, psychology, and social studies.

Postsecondary Education

Prompt engineers typically have bachelor’s degrees in general computer science, artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, mathematics, or data science, but others have degrees in English, communications, and cognitive psychology.

Certification

Certificate programs in AI, prompt engineering, and related fields are offered by colleges and universities, professional associations, and tech companies (who sometimes partner with online learning platforms to offer programs). For example, Google partners with Coursera to offer a free Prompting Essentials Specialization program. To earn the certificate, students must complete the following courses: Start Writing Prompts like a Pro; Design Prompts for Everyday Work Tasks; Speed Up Data Analysis and Presentation Building; and Use AI as a Creative or Expert Partner. Coursera also offers the Complete Prompt Engineering for AI Bootcamp. A fee is required for this bootcamp. Vanderbilt University partners with Coursera to offer a Prompt Engineering for ChatGPT program.

Other Education or Training

Continuing education seminars, webinars, and other learning opportunities are provided by professional associations, private organizations (such as the Prompt Engineering Institute), IT companies, online learning platforms, and colleges and universities. Contact these organizations for more information.
