Artificial Intelligence Prompt Engineers

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Any experience one can obtain in the field of prompt engineering—such as an internship, volunteering, or a part-time job—will be useful.

Prompt engineers need a combination of technical and soft skills to be successful in their work. Technical skills include:

  • knowledge of programming languages, especially Python, but also Java, R. and C++ (but they do not need to know how to code to work in this career)
  • familiarity with big data technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, and Hive
  • a comprehensive understanding of data structures and algorithms, various neural network architectures, large language models, natural language processing techniques, and machine learning concepts
  • proficiency in using AI development tools and platforms
  • data analytics acumen

Soft skills are equally important in this career. Prompt engineers must be proficient in grammar, syntax, and semantics to be able to concisely utilize language to obtain the necessary results and improve prompt generation. They also need strong oral and written communication skills to present reports about their work and interact effectively with their managers and colleagues. Other recommended soft skills include:

  • strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • the ability to work as a member of a team
  • creativity to find new ways to stricture instructions or questions to receive more precise answers
  • adaptability and a willingness to continue to learn about emerging AI technology
