There will continue to be demand for AI prompt engineers over the next decade as AI technology grows more complex and generative AI is increasingly used by the public and businesses and other organizations. The value of the global prompt engineering market is expected to grow from $222.1 million in 2023 to $2.06 billion by 2030, increasing at a compound annual growth rate of 32.8 percent from 2024 to 2030, according to Grand View Research. The data analytics and market intelligence firm says that the “growing adoption of AI, especially natural language processing, is boosting the demand for prompt engineers. This is likely to drive the demand for prompt engineering tools and services. Many industries, including health care; retail; IT and telecommunication; banking, financial services, and insurance; and automotive and transportation, among others, are adopting generative AI technologies, which are having a positive impact on the market.”

On the other hand, some IT industry experts believe that job opportunities for prompt engineers have weakened in recent years. “The concept of prompt engineers was to have an expert crafting the exact right inputs to generate the best responses out of large language models,” according to an article about the employment outlook in the Wall Street Journal. “But today, AI models are much better at intuiting user intent, and they can ask follow-up questions when they’re unclear on it.” With that said, AI technology continues to grow more complex, which suggests that there will continue to be a need for prompt engineers to test evolving AI technology that has not been trained to effectively respond to prompts.

Many companies now offer prompt training to their workers in a wide range of occupations, which suggests that expertise in prompt engineering may become one of many in demand skills for IT workers who do not have the title of “prompt engineer.”
