Artificial Intelligence Prompt Engineers

The Job

AI prompt engineers design and test prompts for content generation tools, chatbots, and other AI applications. They experiment with different prompt formulations and structures, as well as add context and examples, to train the AI model to generate more useful and accurate results. Engineers also personalize the prompt training to create an AI model that is whimsical, one that is serious and formal, or to meet other goals. According to TechTarget.com, a typical AI prompt has four main components:

  • Instruction: A simple question that includes instructions on how the AI model should answer the query
  • Context: Essential background information that allows the AI model to generate accurate and relevant content (called an output)
  • Input Data: Includes both instructions and relevant information about the topic so that the AI model can answer the query
  • Examples: Can include specific examples that clue in the AI model to what the prompt engineer is seeking in its response

After creating a prompt and receiving an output from the AI model, the prompt engineer analyzes the response and, if necessary, revises the prompt (or starts over with a new prompt) to improve user interactions and system performance. During their work, they must weigh the moral aspects of the prompt/output process, including such issues as bias, ethics, and cultural sensitivity. They also must keep in mind their own assumptions, biases, and cultural perceptions to counteract known biases within an AI model.
