Artificial Intelligence Prompt Engineers

Since the early days of computing, programmers have created basic instructions (prompts) that told computers what to do. But the introduction of artificial intelligence allows computers to be programmed to make decisions on their own and act independently of humans. The emergence of the AI subspecialties of natural language processing and computer vision allow information technology (IT) professionals to create more complex prompts—which generate results that were sometimes correct, but often false or off-topic. As a result, the career of AI prompt engineer emerged due to the need to craft prompts that could be better understood by large language models and generative AI tools. There are many benefits to prompt engineering, including improving the user experience, enhancing content generation and data processing, and automating customer support systems and virtual assistants. More effective prompt engineering also provides developers with greater control, including reducing the chances of a user misusing the AI tool or making a request that the technology cannot accurately handle. “Prompt engineering makes for a solid investment for AI professionals,” according to the Artificial Intelligence Board of America. “It is foundational to maintaining a competitive edge, influencing policy, and understanding the path forward for adaptive prompt systems and multimodal AI interactions.”
