Owners of successful computer support businesses generally earn much more but wages vary by location, experience level, and the type of business they support. Those working in large cities like New York and Los Angeles, for example, average more than those in the Midwest, the Southwest, and the Northwest. Someone in New York with more than 10 years experience can average over $100,000 a year, while a consultant with similar experience in the Southwest may make closer to $70,000 a year. Some very experienced, business-minded consultants can make $150,000 a year or more, and those who own a successful business may earn into the millions. Like all self-employed workers, computer support service owners must provide their own benefits such as health insurance and retirement savings accounts.
