Graphics Programmers

Outlook

Employment of computer programmers is projected to decline by 7 percent from 2018 to 2028, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Technological developments have made it easier to write basic code, eliminating some of the need for programmers to do this work. More sophisticated software has allowed more and more end users to design, write, and implement more of their own programs. As a result, many of the programming functions are being transferred to other types of workers. In addition, programmers will continue to face increasing competition from international programming businesses where work can be contracted out at a lower cost.

As more applications for computer graphics are explored; the Internet, mobile devices, computer and video games, and special-effects-oriented movies continue to grow in popularity; and businesses find ways to use graphics in their everyday operations, some new jobs will emerge and there will still be a need for graphics programmers to replace those who leave the field.

Demand will be stronger in certain industry segments. The growing popularity of software-as-a-service (applications that are provided through the Internet) will create some new opportunities at software publishers.
