Graphics Programmers

Most programmers work with state-of-the-art technology. They usually put in eight to 12 hours a day and work 40 hours a week, although some work 50 hours or more. To meet deadlines or finish rush projects, they may work evenings and weekends. Programmers work alone or as part of a team and often consult with the end users of the graphics program, as well as engineers, user experience and interface designers, and other specialists.

Programmers sometimes travel to attend seminars, conferences, and trade shows. Graphics programmers who work for software manufacturers may need to travel to assist current clients in their work or to solicit new customers for the software by demonstrating and discussing the product with potential buyers.

Graphics programmers in visual illustration departments of film or television production may spend weeks designing graphics for a clip that lasts minutes. There is often considerable pressure due to these deadlines.
