Unions and Associations

Some engineers may be represented by the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, and other unions. In addition, many organizations provide useful resources. ASME is the primary professional association for mechanical engineers. It offers publications, networking opportunities, continuing education classes and workshops, job listings, and other resources. Other organizations that provide professional support to engineers include the American Society for Engineering Education, General Aviation Manufacturers Association, National Society of Professional Engineers, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and the Society of Women Engineers. The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying is an organization of engineering and land surveying licensing boards; it develops administers licensing exams. ABET accredits postsecondary engineering education programs.
