High School

High school students who are interested in becoming webmasters should take as many computer science classes as possible, including those in programming, digital design, and animation. Mathematics classes are also helpful. Writing skills are important in this career, so English classes are good choices. Those who plan to start their own businesses should take business and marketing classes. 

Postsecondary Training

A number of community colleges, colleges, and universities offer classes and certificate programs for webmasters, but there is no standard educational path or requirement for becoming a webmaster. An associate’s degree or certification may suffice, but a computer-related bachelor’s degree may be required for more advanced jobs. Many webmasters have bachelor's degrees in computer science, information systems, digital media, or computer programming, but liberal arts degrees, such as English, are not uncommon. There are also webmasters who have degrees in engineering, mathematics, and marketing.

Certification

The International Web Association offers professional certificates for Web professionals. Many colleges, universities, and technical schools throughout the United States also offer webmaster certification programs. Programs vary in length, anywhere from three weeks to nine months or more. Topics covered include client/server technology, Web development, programs, and software and hardware. 

Other Education or Training

The International Web Association and the World Organization of Webmasters provide continuing education classes, webinars, and workshops.
