The field of computer systems design and related services is among the fastest-growing industries, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). As a result, employment for webmasters is expected to grow much faster than the average for all careers through 2029.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that when technology advances extremely rapidly, it tends to make old methods of doing things obsolete. If current trends continue, the responsibilities of the webmaster will be carried out by a group or department instead of a single employee, in order to keep up with the demands of the position. It is also possible that, like desktop publishing, user-friendly software programs will make Web site design so easy and efficient that it no longer requires an "expert" to do it well. Webmasters who are concerned with job security should be willing to continue learning and using the very latest developments in technology, so that they are prepared to move into the future of online communication, whatever it may be. The DOL reports that webmasters who have knowledge of multiple programming languages and digital media tools, such as Flash and Photoshop, will have the best job prospects.
