Embedded Systems Engineers

Outlook

The U.S. Department of Labor does not provide an employment outlook for embedded systems engineers, but it does offer the following job growth predictions (from 2023 to 2033) for engineers and computer professionals in related occupations:

  • hardware engineers: +7 percent (faster than the average for all careers)
  • electrical and electronics engineers: +9 percent (much faster than the average)
  • software developers: +18 percent (much faster than the average)

The global market for embedded systems technology was valued at $123.8 billion in 2023, according to Global Industry Analysts. The field is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 4.9 percent through 2030, reaching $172.6 billion. "The proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) has made these systems indispensable for enabling device connectivity and smart functionalities in homes, workplaces, and cities," the firm explains. "Regulatory and safety requirements across industries mandate the use of embedded systems to meet precise control and safety standards. Consumer demand for smart devices and the push for sustainability encourage the development of systems that enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact."
