Certification or Licensing

Certification is not required but can give a manufacturing employee a boost in the job market. APICS—Association for Operations and Management (a subsidiary of the Association for Supply Chain Management) offers certification in planning and inventory management as well as other certifications to individuals who pass a series of tests and accrue professional development points within the required time frame (https://www.ascm.org/learning-development/certifications-credentials). The Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (https://www.msscusa.org/certification) offers the certified production technician credential, which has five individual certificate modules: Safety; Quality Practices & Measurement; Manufacturing Processes & Production; Maintenance Awareness; and Green Production. The American Society for Quality offers the certified manager of quality/organizational excellence credential to managers who have at least 10 years of experience or education and who pass an exam. Cost estimators can become certified by the American Society of Professional Estimators, AACE International, and the International Cost Estimating and Analysis Association. The Manufacturers’ Representatives Educational Research Foundation offers several certification designations for sales representatives who are employed by manufacturers.
