Another way to learn about microbiology is to talk to a microbiologist. You can search for a mentor through the ASM Web site (https://www.asm.org). To gain experience working in a scientific setting, try to get a part-time job with a company whose business is related to science. Volunteer at a local hospital. The ASM suggests that you get involved in a science club or a science fair in your school or community.

You can also participate in summer enrichment science programs at colleges and universities. These programs give you a chance to learn more about science, interact with professors, and meet people who share your interest in the microbiology.
