The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) reports the median wage for civil and architectural drafters was $61,820 in May 2023. The lowest paid 10 percent of these drafters made less than $39,720 annually; the highest paid 10 percent made more than $94,580 annually.

Electrical and electronics drafters had higher earnings, with an average annual wage of $69,260, according to the DOL. Salaries ranged from $46,470 and $103,530 or more. Fifty percent of electrical and electronics drafters earned between $54,970 and $83,870.

CAD drafters earned median salaries of $65,422 in August 2024, according to Salary.com. Salaries ranged from less than $59,018 to $72,499 or more.

Actual salaries vary widely depending on the type and size of the employer, their level of experience and geographic location, exact job requirements, and the training needed to obtain those jobs. With increased training and experience, technicians can earn higher salaries, and some technicians with special skills, extensive experience, or added responsibilities may earn more.
