Exploring This Job

Learn as much as you can about Big Data and data analytics by reading books and visiting Web sites. Here are several suggestions:

Attend summer exploration programs that are offered by colleges and universities, high schools, tech companies, and nonprofit organizations. For example, high school students who are currently enrolled in grades 10 or 11 with a strong background in math and coding can sign up for a Data Science Academy that is offered by the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. During the three-week program, students learn from Wharton professors while designing their own data science projects. Session topics include the foundations of probabilities and statistics; the acquisition, preparation, and visualization of data; and machine learning. Visit https://globalyouth.wharton.upenn.edu/programs-courses/data-science-academy for more information.

Other exploration options include signing up for data analytics bootcamps, participating in information interviews and job shadowing opportunities with analysts, getting involved in data competitions (such as those offered by the American Statistical Association, https://www.amstat.org), and joining computer science clubs.
