Salaries for software application designers ranged from less than $64,240 to $164,590 or more in May 2019, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. They earned median annual salaries of $107,510. At the managerial level, salaries are even higher and can reach $175,000 or more. Mobile application developers earn higher salaries, ranging from $112,750 to $189,750 in 2020, according to Robert Half Technology‘s 2021 Salary Guide.

Salaries for software application developers vary with the size of the company and by location. Salaries may be higher in areas where there is a large concentration of computer companies, such as the Silicon Valley and San Francisco in northern California and Texas, Virginia, Massachusetts, Washington, and New York.

Most developers work for large companies, which offer a full benefits package that includes health insurance, vacation and sick time, and a profit sharing or retirement plan. Freelance developers must provide their own benefits.
