Software Application Developers

Work Environment

Software application developers work in comfortable environments. Many computer companies are known for their casual work atmosphere; employees generally do not have to wear suits, except during client meetings. Overall, many software developers work standard weeks. However, they may be required to work overtime near a deadline, and over 25 percent work more than 40 hours per week. It is common in software development to share office or cubicle space with two or three coworkers, which is typical of the team approach to working. Internet technology is also allowing software application developers to work from home or other remote locations. As a software application developer or programmer, much of the day is spent in front of the computer, although a software developer will have occasional team meetings or meetings with clients.

Software application development can be stressful work for several reasons. First, the market for software is very competitive, and companies are pushing to develop more innovative software, including cutting-edge mobile apps, and to get them on the market before competitors do. For this same reason, software application development is also very exciting and creative work. Second, software developers are given a project and a deadline. It is up to the developer and team members to budget their time to finish in the allocated time. Finally, working with programming languages and so many details can be very frustrating, especially when the tiniest glitch means the program will not run. For this reason, software application developers must be patient and diligent.
