Automotive Dealership Owners

History

For as long as there have been automobiles, there have been automotive dealerships and owners and managers that operated them. By 1951, 47,500 automobile dealerships existed in the United States.

Industry consolidation has significantly reduced this number today, but the approximately 16,682 franchised light-vehicle dealerships nationwide sold 17.1 million vehicles in 2019, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), a nearly century-old organization dedicated to promoting the interests of domestic and international automotive dealership owners.

Many dealership owners belong to NADA. Owners that specialize in import cars belong to the American International Automobile Dealers Association, which represents the economic well-being of more than 9,500 international name-plate dealerships.
