History
For as long as there have been automobiles, there have been automotive dealerships and owners and managers that operated them. By 1951, 47,500 automobile dealerships existed in the United States.
Industry consolidation has significantly reduced this number today. As of midyear 2023, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), there were 16,839 new car dealerships nationwide. (NADA was founded in 1917 to promote the interests of domestic and international automotive dealership owners.)
Many dealership owners belong to NADA. Owners that specialize in import cars belong to the American International Automobile Dealers Association, which represents the economic well-being of more than 9,400 international name-plate dealerships.
