The outlook for the global automated vehicle industry is bright, and therefore good opportunities are predicted for driverless car engineers. The global autonomous car market is expected to grow in value from $1.50 billion in 2022 to $13.63 billion by 2030, according to Fortune Business Insights. The data analytics firm says that "one key factor driving the global autonomous vehicle (AV) market growth is the continuous advancement in technology. Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, sensor technologies, and connectivity contribute to improving the capabilities of AVs, making them safer, more efficient, and increasingly viable for widespread adoption. Technological innovation remains a critical force propelling the growth and development of the autonomous vehicles industry."

Automated vehicles are extremely complex and there are many issues and concerns that need to be addressed before they are widely accepted by the public and safe for regular use. ABI Research, a market-foresight advisory firm, predicts that 8 million consumer vehicles shipping in 2025 will feature SAE Level 3 and 4 technologies (these vehicles require the presence of drivers) or SAE Level 5 technology (these vehicles do not require a human driver). That may be an optimistic prediction as many AV companies struggle to perfect AV hardware. Automakers reported nearly 400 crashes of vehicles with partially automated driver-assist systems in an 11-month period from 2021 to 2022, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Self-driving car companies will need engineers to continue developing and innovating driverless cars and solving the complex technical problems to ensure safe operating systems. Driverless car engineers will continue to be in demand by autonomous car companies around the world to solve these and other challenges.
