Driverless Car Engineers

Unions and Associations

Some driverless car engineers are represented by the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers and other unions.

Driverless car engineers must continually learn in their profession, and membership in professional associations provides them with access to educational programs and conferences, among numerous other resources. One example is SAE International, a membership organization for engineers and other technical professionals in aerospace, commercial vehicle, and automotive engineering. It offers continuing education opportunities and publishes Autonomous Vehicle Engineering and the SAE International Journal of Connected and Automated Vehicles. Another professional association, the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, has a Technical Committee on Autonomous Ground Vehicles and Intelligent Transportation Systems. The Connected Vehicle Trade Association offers a connected vehicle professional credentialing program.

Other associations for engineers include the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association, American Society for Engineering Education, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, Association for Computing Machinery, Society of Professional Engineers, and the Society of Women Engineers, to name just a few. ABET accredits postsecondary engineering and engineering technology training programs.
